Todd Casey oil painting with Gamblin YInMn Blue, the "new blue" or "Oregon Blue"
Переглядів 2,2 тис.2 роки тому
See Gamblin's oil paint YInMn Blue (also referred to as the "new blue" or "Oregon Blue") in action. YInMn (pronounced yin-min) is the first blue pigment discovered in over 200 years. From the tube, Gamblin YInMn Blue is a "true blue" charged with an undeniable pigment load. The formula created in 2020 by Robert Gamblin packs as much pigment as it can possibly bear to give you the full experienc...
Navigating Color Space FULL VIDEO, HIGHER RES

This video shows painters how to access the universe of color or "Color Space". The animated sequences demonstrate how to define a color by its attributes: value, hue and intensity (chroma). During the program, Robert Gamblin demonstrates a few of the secrets of the Old Masters so you, too, will know how to mix green and red into blue. This is the same as the previously posted 3-part video but ...

Gamblin Oil Painting Mediums

At Gamblin, our mission is to lead oil painting into the future. To us this means crafting materials as they ought to be, not just as they have been. Our contemporary mediums are true to historic working properties, yet safer and more permanent.
Authentic color. Naturally.

No other painting media holds the same raw power of communication, pigment load and artistic possibility. When an artist squeezes oil color from one of our tubes, they experience color at its maximum.

Part Three: Using Color Space in Color Mixing
A really helpful overview. Materials have changed some (a lot?) since college in the 70's, so this was very useful.
40,000 years? No, that is a very Smithsonian propagandised number, try a number that is within a more reasonable recording of factual history. UNLESS, you know something that actually happened 40,000 years ago that the rest of us don't...would you like to share what that is, if anything? For everything else about your colour space, these ideas are great for colour restoration of art and textiles made/found from approx 120 years ago.
One more question: what about using Gamblin's solvent free fluid (safflower oil and galkyd) to oil out, thus avoiding solvent?
Thank you for this video! Question: Doesn't the Gamsol eat into the oil paint?
Thank you mr.Gamblin
Hello from Italy 🇮🇹 how can I buy your products ? I have take only two colours by Amazon . Thank you and greetings
Hello! I have varnished a 2x3 painting with gamvar, but unfortunately a portion of it has beading/ not shiny part. I tried to “spot treatment/fix” the area by applying gamsol, then gamvar again after a few hours, but, the spot is still visible. :( I plan to strip the varnish of the whole 2x3 feet painting using gamsol again, then revarnish it with gamvar. How long should I wait after removing gamsol, before I varnish it with gamvar again? 5 hours? 24 hours?
we really need some updated videos :) the VHS quality is retrocool, but not great to see things clearly
hope to see more content from Gamblin. I like your products and would like to see more of what can be done with it.
The upside down trick for the gallon is great
Finally I understand.....after so many years. Thank you!!!!!
As always, Gamblin gives me the tools and information to paint however I like. Thanks for the excellent content!
Can you also do this with the pigment sludge if you used walnut or safflower oil to clean your brushes?
Yes. You just need to give the “dirty” safflower oil time for the paint sediments to settle at the bottom. Keep in mind though that old oil turns rancid and will smell. They’re not toxic fumes like solvent, just the smell of rancid oil which is also how your oil paints smell like. Your paints have rancid oil too.
What paints in the Artist Oil paints would you recommend as the primaries yellow, red and blue?
Ultramarine Blue , Cadmium Yellow and Cadium Red or Alizarin Crimson. Keep in mind that cadmium is very poisonous so if you plan to use cadmium-based colours, make sure you either use gloves or wash your hands well before bringing them close to your mouth, eyes or nose if they are dirty with the colour.
I wish there was a narration, instead of stupid music. Should the Gamvar be diluted? I seem to remember another video, where someone demonstrated Gamvar application, and it was more thorough.
I know I am viewing this many years after it was first presented, but I have a question, what Cool Orange and what Warm Violet are being shown on your color wheel you created?
Oiling out with the Galkyd/Gamsol mixture as instructed worked well. Thanks. I ended up applying a 2nd oiling out coat a few days after the first because I had some darker colors were not appearing as saturated as others. Looks great now. However, after 6 days the surface is still tacky. Should it take that long to dry? I'm concerned.
Great course. Thanks, Robert!
Fascinating historiography of pigments. Thank you for this.
I love this, thank you.
That’s a lot of solvent, maybe too much
Cool
Will try the brush
Awesome!
I used cheese cloth as demonstrated, but natural canvas texture shredded the cloth and left lint embedded in the oil! I would recommend another type of cloth.
Those ears!
I just started working at an art store and feel like I know absolutely nothing! I’m so grateful for this video it’s so helpful!
Who ever thought color was so complicated
I've been wondering, how many applications of varnish can I safely apply? I like a 'thick' looking varnish to make the painting look older!
you might as well use some epoxy if you want that level of thickness
This is a fantastic video to understand colours and colour mixing. Thank you for making this available.
Can using burnt umber because instead of black and greys to avoid losing intensity or will it change the temperature of the color?
will bring down the value
I need a little more detail. I'm almost finished with a beautiful painting and never had this issue of shiny spots and very dull spots. I use refined linseed oil as a medium. My paintings have always dried to an even, satin type finish. So I'm stumped . I think some paints now come out of the tube very full bodied and dry while other oil paints are too oily and you get that glob of oil spilling out before you get to the paint. I'm afraid to complete the painting and then oil out bc I don't want to ruin it. I have Gamblin refined oil and Gamsol. can I use a 50/50 mixture over the dry painting to even the surface? help!
I have oiled out with linseed oil to good effect. I didn’t thin it much with Gamsol, and as a result the almost straight oil took almost 2 weeks before it was touch dry and not tacky.
Should I still oil out with galkyd if I didn't use a galkyd medium in the painting?
Sound is very bad. I cannot understand! :-(
this is actually what you are supposed to do lol
Jonathan Simon, where do you get empty tubes to put your new made paint?
Cheryl, a quick search for 'empty paint tubes' yields results with a wide variety of sizes. Looks like simple pliers can be used to crimp the open end. I must say, this opens my eyes to a whole new world of making my own paints while keeping our environment cleaner. Thanks, Jonathan!
Why is he dancing
I find all the Gamblin videos to be helpful. Thanks.
My one criticism: his starting point is just the usual Munsell Color System, but he never names it. That's a very weirdly glaring omission and makes it feel like he's taking credit for discovering this system, but then again that's just how capitalist marketing works ("I talked to many artists," "I discovered," "using MY system," etc). Aside from that, this was an incredibly useful and informative presentation, really useful mental models for thinking about your paints and colors! Love how he tied it to the different art movements across time, and explaining how AND WHY the different paints behave differently in different blending scenarios, then bridging that into developing your own palates and color language.
Yeah it seems like this company is trying to take more credit than they've earned.
@@dobeeeeval More a sign of the times than anything else, and luckily it's merely irritating at worst. Certainly doesn't harm the ideas or info.
The Munsell system starts from 5 primary colors: red/yellow/green/blue/violet. It makes more sense because there is more nuance between green and violet than between red and yellow and it seems more true to the complementaries of teal/red and green/magenta. I like the munsell system more because of that key difference. I also appreciate Gamblin creating this 3-d animation explaining a basic color space and mixing relations as it has helped me understand mixing so simply.
Awesome.
homeboy really roasted acrylic paint lol
Can you use Gamvar on a dry cold wax painting? Cheers
Next time, a visual demo would be cool!!..
Good Morning I am using Windsor Newton Artist Painting Medium for for oiling out & enriching dull patches in my paintings which are rich with chromatic blacks. However when the medium has dried over time it seems as if the patches return and also when i try to varnish the paintings the varnish beads and rolls off. this has become a real conundrum and I need advice. I was using Gamvarl as a varnish. Does the WN medium prevent the varnish from "taking" to the surface? if so what do you recommend I do?
This is really an incredible resource. Thanks for putting these videos out into the world. I corresponded through email with Gamblin early this year, having a bunch of further questions about your color selection. Couldn’t believe how much time and effort was spent by this person over the course of our conversation. That’s how you keep customers for life. Cheers from Portland!
Hello , this apply for textured surfaces too?...
We don't realize how special things are until we realize the struggle throughout history to get them.
your videos are very helpful, my quation is, i used a sprey retouch varnish on my canvas, the resultant is not so good, can I use your technisch now by using linseed oil on the same canvas,,, I mean 2 time different technisch on same canvas, thank you
What are the pigment numbers of your split primary colors? The cool and warm colors you used in the 2D color wheel. Thanks
